Difficult School Budget Decisions Ahead: Make Your Voice Heard
As we are all aware, there are some serious and rather sad budget cuts looming. There are proposals on the table that include cutting our library programs and our Instrumental Music Program for grades 4-8.
Once these programs are cut, it is very unlikely they will ever return.
Our children develop many important foundations during the elementary and middle school years. For those of you who are not aware, in terms of band alone, our amazing music teachers and band directors have brought the band program into a whole new light–this year we had a record number of students selected for the state-wide districts competition and our middle school and high school bands have won numerous awards and accolades at a number of different festivals.
What about the 600+ students currently enrolled in district instrumental music programs? If we lose the band program at this level, is the high school program next? We can boast having NMRSD graduates who have gone on to play with the Boston Pops!
Please see the email addresses below for our school committee members, along with addresses for those elected officials representing our state district. The School Committee has expressed a desire to hear from the community on the many cuts we are facing.
The School Committee will hold an open forum on February 8 and a parent forum on February 10 both at the NM High School at 6:00 pm. The school committee welcomes input from parents and residents alike.

Pretzel & Popcorn Initiative - off to a great start!
Our first run of pretzel and popcorn selling went well last week. We will be selling soft pretzels and popcorn twice a month (currently on Thursdays) during school lunches. All money earned during each grade’s lunch period goes back to that grade’s activity fund–for class needs/projects and to help offset the costs of field trips, etc.
We are charging $1.00 for either a large bag of popcorn or a soft pretzel. The PTO is supplying the volunteers and only taking out money to replenish supplies. A small amount will also be shared with the cafeteria for their efforts in this venture.
We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from parents and students alike who are looking forward to these fun lunchtime treats–with the pretzels offering a healthy and fillng snack alternative.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers–we can’t offer new initiatives and ideas without you! We are currently setting up the schedule for the remainder of the year, which will be posted once confirmed.
Mr. Chew will announce the Pretzel & Popcorn weeks.

The Townsend Recreation & Recycling Committee is inviting all schools to participate in this year’s Earth Day (Sat., April 24th). Planning is underway, so please contact Karen Clement at clem6six@verizon.net if you have an idea and would like to be part of the event. This year’s theme is water conservation.
Parents and teachers: be sure to check out the Paper Retriever Web site for Earth Day-related projects you can do with your students, specifically, Ecological impact of your recycling efforts.

Thank you for using the Paper Retriever Bin behind the school. You can use the green and yellow Paper Retriever Bin behind the school to recycle all your magazines, mail, newspapers, and office papers; but do not include cardboard (cereal boxes and soda cases are considered cardboard) and please, no wrapping paper, as it contains too much color). You may use the completely green bin to recycle cardboard.
Our schools earn money each time the bins are full enough to be emptied and, as you know from reading the local news, every little bit counts when it comes to helping our schools.
Great way to recycle all those holiday catalogs and earn money for our school!
